The human brain is absolutely incredible. It processes over 6,000 thoughts a day.Problem solving, logic, drawing conclusions, creating images, building theories, asking questions and much more happening all day long.It is like a computer hard drive spinning in the background whether we realize it or not. While this is a wonderful thing, it can also be exhausting and overwhelming to have this onslaught of activity happening between our ears at all times. We want to learn to lead our thoughts instead of them leading us.There is a reason that Paul says, “Take every thought captive to Christ” in 2 Corinthians. How do we do this?
There are many practical and helpful practices that can help us take back authority over our thoughts. We will discuss a few here.
I think of a fishing analogy in which we are the fish and thoughts are like a delicious worm floating by.If we don’t take the extra moment to notice the hook inside the worm, we snatch every worm that comes at us.Once hooked, the thought reals us all the way in.But we can say “no” to thoughts.Let it float by.Our brains are always grabbing onto fragments of thought… but we don’t have to “go” with each one.Almost everyday I find myself saying, “No thanks, that isn’t my thought.” to thoughts that are unhelpful or unhealthy. Some are easier than others to let go of.
Our brains are made to open and close loops. We have a drive to come to conclusions and solve problems. This is a wonderful gift, but what happens is that there are things in this life that we cannot solve. There are questions that won’t have answers. There are struggles that won’t have closure yet.We can learn to let go of our brain’s drive to close the loops. We can allow ourselves to be in the questions without having to have the answers yet.We can be in a struggle without having to find the solution yet.It takes intentionality, but we can do it.
Don’t be afraid of healthy distractions. Our thought path will continue in the same direction unless we disrupt it with something else.Change your environment, go for a walk, take a deep breath, have a conversation about something else, watch a tv show, read a book, exercise, do something fun, etc.
