Chapter 7 in Fathered By God
(View the content below to get started)
Evan is a boy who connects to music in an almost supernatural way. He is beckoned by the music he hears inside and out. It moves him closer and closer to his parents who he has become separated from. There is not a better movie scene that I have seen that is better at showing us the power and mystery of beauty. Just as his music pulls Evan closer and closer to his parents, God pulls us closer and closer, back to Himself through beauty. Notice what words or phrases jump out at you in this clip.
“In our culture we see vulnerability as weakness. We associate vulnerability with emotions we want to avoid such as fear, shame, and uncertainty. Yet we too often lose sight of the fact that vulnerability is also the birthplace of joy, belonging, creativity, authenticity, and love.”
This TED talk that Brene Brown does is something that all of the True Pursuit Team has watched and discussed at length. Brene’s work on vulnerability, shame and wholeheartedness has been instrumental in our growth. We have learned that without vulnerability we cannot let beauty or love in, nor offer it.
Notice beauty this week… songs, sunsets, nature, your wife, your children, paintings, art, etc. and allow yourself to more fully connect to the emotions and feelings that arise. Notice what happens.
In this audio Matt Emhoff shares his experiences in how his Lover heart was wounded and missed. Also, how God has been walking him through healing in his Lover heart.
Scared of Sex

When a man starts to see and love beauty, his heart can trully start to be awakened.
The lover balances out the warrior so that the man does not only become a fighter and remembers WHAT he is fighting for.
God is not really after your discipline or productivity as much is he is after the awakening of your deepest longings and desires.
As men it is hard to understand, but God really wants to be our “intimate one” and he wants to pursue and romance us.
The awakening of the heart is crucial if a man would truly love a woman.
The heart of a lover never gets to awaken or develop in a man so long as he rejects the heart, choosing to remain safely in analysis, dissection and reason.
(Respond personally to each question in your journal)
Is beauty a category that you had thought about for your masculine journey and just life in general before reading this?
What were the first categories of beauty (other than women) that you began to enjoy? Try to describe what happens inside, when you are affected by beauty.
Do you feel like you have a good balance of warrior and beauty in your life?
In what ways do you need to move from the world of analysis into the world of your heart? What would that look like?
How comfortable are you using the term “Lover” to refer to God?
When did your heart first awaken to a woman? How did it feel and how did it affect your life?
How has the lack of initiation and/or wounding in the Lover stage affected your relationships with women?
When you think of the way you interact with women, are you a consumer or a lover? If you are a consumer, do you want to change that?
How was your Lover heart wounded or missed? Do any from this list connect to your story? [embeddoc url=”http://deeper.fiveespressos.net/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2015/07/The-Lover-Heart-Wounded.docx” height=”300px” viewer=”microsoft”]
How do you hide from beauty? Reason, logic, busyness, dismissing it as a category?
How do you try to get beauty without God?
Can you put into words the deepest desires and yearnings of your heart? Do you believe that God can meet those needs?
(Find space to be alone with God and ask him these questions. You may want to bring your journal to capture what He says)
Father, in what ways has my lover heart been wounded or missed?
Will you come and love me? Will you heal those broken, hurting places? Will you teach me how to love and desire beauty in pure, whole, holy ways?
(Find space to be alone with God and invite him in to heal your wounded heart. You may want to bring your journal to capture what He says)
Many of us have had sexual experiences that were very harmful to us and our relationships with other people. God loves you and loves your sexuality. He desires that you are made whole again. If you feel like you need sexual healing, enter into this sexual healing prayer offered by Ransomed Heart. Click here.
(Take time to talk to your ally face to face or over the phone about these questions)
Discuss with your ally what your three biggest takeaways from this chapter are?
Did God speak to you at all in your solitude? What did he say? What did you notice about yourself in solitude?
(Take time for a personal worship time during this week)
I love how this video helps remind me of all the beauty in everyday life and how much I need something beautiful to touch me everyday.
As you watch this video, allow yourself to be drawn into the beauty of God. The first time I heard this, I was drawn to God more as a mother who is comforting her hurting child. It is very intimate and you may want to notice your own response to this video.
What Did You Learn
