Chapter 7 in Fathered By God

(View the content below to get started)

A good king fights fearlessly for his people and sacrifices himself for their freedom.  Watch as Maximus defeats evil, frees his men, the boy Lucious and his mom, and all of Rome.  The result is restoration.

Notice the tough decisions you have been having to make lately or that are coming up.landscapes nature trees forest path fog oath 1680x1050 wallpaper_www.wallpaperfo.com_94  Many times there are no good solutions but a path must be chosen and you are responsible for the outcome.  This is a part of wielding power, especially on behalf of others.  What happens in your heart when this happens?

Real Life

In this audio Matt Emhoff interviews Mark, Patrick and Pete about their journeys in the King stage.

Five Essential Messages of Male Initiation

Much of becoming a king is dying to yourself.  This is the next level of the masculine initiation from Richard Rohr’s book Adam’s Return.  This book kicked my ass and I am still reeling…in a good way.  This is my response to Richard’s 5 essential messages of male initiation.  Take some time with this, if you dare.[embeddoc url=”” height=”300px” viewer=”microsoft”]

Your Story

Write down what it was like for you to live in your king stage.  Many of you may still be in this stage or recently entered into it.  What has it been like?  What have been the struggles and victories?

Key Points
Before a man can handle power, his character must be forged.
A king is given power and resources and influence for the benefit of others.
To teach us how to be a good king, God will put us in situations in which we will have to act decisively and strongly on behalf of others.
A man cannot be a good king without first living through or recovering the other stages of the masculine journey.
As a king, do not isolate yourself. Do not rule alone! Surround yourself with good counselors, mentors and friends.
To be a good king, you must develop a friendship with God.

(Respond personally to each question in your journal)

What have you understood the goal of your masculine journey/your life to be before this expedition?
Is power and influence alluring to you? Why?
At this stage of life, what do you rule over? Are you a good king in these places?
In these places that you rule over, is your will surrendered to God? Do you often ask God’s opinion on things?
What posture do you want… others serving you or you serving others?
Where in your life have you been selfish and need to start putting other people’s needs before your own?
How was your king heart wounded?   Do any from this list resonate?   [embeddoc url=”” height=”300px” viewer=”microsoft”]
What have the effects been from the wounds against your king heart?
Take some time with this list and journal what comes up in your heart. [embeddoc url=”” height=”300px” viewer=”microsoft”]
What would you like God to work on to further your preparation to be king?
Who helps you reign as king? How can you invite their help more?
What kind of king do you want to be?

(Find space to be alone with God and ask him these questions.  You may want to bring your journal to capture what He says)

Father, how do you see me as a king?
If you are brave, go back to the journaling question and ask God for the things you would like God to work on to prepare you to be a king.   Listen to His response.
God, what do you want to say to me about being a king?

(Find space to be alone with God and invite him in to heal your wounded heart.  You may want to bring your journal to capture what He says)

Much of our wounding in the King stage comes from us choosing our will instead of God’s.  This prayer is called the Turning Around Prayer and it is designed to help us surrender to God at multiple levels.  For each section take time to write down specific things in your life.  [embeddoc url=”” height=”300px” viewer=”microsoft”]

(Take time to talk to your ally face to face or over the phone about these questions)

Discuss with your allies what things in your life you currently rule over and how that is going.
What are the places in your life that you need to start putting other’s needs in front of your own?
Did anything jump out at you this week inparticular?

(Take time for a personal worship time during this week)

While watching these videos and worshiping, allow the lyrics to paint a picture of what kind of king God is and how we approach Him as His beloved sons.

What Did You Learn

Try to synthesize everything that you learned down to a few main points by revisiting your notes from each section.  Pay special attention to the “Key Points” section.
