Your mind is meant to act as a filter, sifting through thoughts, images, phrases, interactions, and environments making sure the dangerous things are not allowed through. It is incredible to realize that our analyzing, problem solving, logical brains do an incredible job protecting our hearts from the chaos of pain. Take a moment to thank your mind for doing such a good job.
Here is the problem. Anything that is related to love is uncontrollable, illogical, mysterious and has a high risk of pain. So, we allow our minds to overcompensate to protect us from the pain of this vulnerability. We stay in a place of analyzing, problem solving, logic only instead of finding a healthy balance.
There is a way to give our mind a break and safely dip our toe into the realm of the heart. We can relax into the mystery of emotion, creativity, and intimacy. Yes, there is a risk of pain in this vulnerability but when we risk pain we also risk being known. What else do we want than being known by God and finding out that we are okay?
Meditation is a rhythm that practices allowing our mind to rest and our heart to “breathe”. We go far beyond intellectual understanding to the exquisite experience of the mystery of just being. We become present to our own heart and find that we are also present to God’s presence as well.
