“Do you view struggle as a threat or as an opportunity?”Shawn Achor – Before Happiness
This quote by Shawn Achor stopped me in my tracks. It was very convicting.I know that I have spent most of my life viewing struggle or potential suffering as a threat. He follows this question up with another:“Do you spend most of your time creating escape plans or success plans?”Yikes.Of course, if you view struggle as a threat then you will be spending most of your time creating an escape plan, ready to flee instead of move forward.
Please don’t hear this as a dismissal of your pain or discomfort. It is real.It is uncomfortable and sometimes downright excruciating. The point is, if we have to go through discomfort, we might as well allow it to do some good work in our life.As Dan Allender says, “Don’t waste your pain.”In fact, that is how all change works. It is a stretching of our comfort zone into something new and unknown. You can ask any woman who has given birth… stretching is not fun!But when they look into the eyes of the new little baby their body has created through a process of pain and discomfort, there is no doubt it is worth it.
What emotional or relational discomfort are you in right now?
What are the opportunities it is providing?
What would it look like to embrace the stretching?
What is the success plan you are creating to move through it?
